Self Denial Fund
Welcome to the Self Denial Fund page!
I am happy you are here! Members of The Order of the Daughters of King® have given generously since 1897! Because of their donations, the love of God has spread around the world through missions and missionaries. Read on for history about how it all began and where we are today!
“The Lily Funsten Ward Memorial Fund, known as the “Self Denial Fund,” was established by a resolution adopted at the fifth annual convention held in Washington, DC, in 1897. Miss Lily Funsten Ward, a Daughter of the King and a missionary in China, asked that a day be set aside for the celebration of Holy Communion with special intention for the church in China. In compliance with this request, it was resolved that a Self Denial Week be observed every year. At a subsequent convention held at Portland, Oregon, in September 1922, a resolution was adopted setting aside February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, as a special day for the ingathering of the Self Denial Fund. The Self Denial Fund supports missionaries and missions around the world. Self Denial Fund grants support missionaries and mission trips for both senior and Junior Daughters.” (Page 10, National Handbook)
Today, the Self Denial Fund continues to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ in the USA and in other countries such as Baghdad, Barundi, Brazil, China, the Dominican Republic, England, Ethiopia, Haiti, Honduras, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Kenya, Malawi and Nigeria just to name a few! God’s work is accomplished all over the world in the name of Jesus Christ and for His sake because of the generosity of Daughters of the King. Following is a thank you note from a grant given to Solar Light for Africa.
“Thank you so very much for your donation from the Self Denial Fund to Solar Light of Africa. This summer we were able to complete our project of light all of the occupied orphan homes at Restoration Gateway! In the few days we were there at R.G., we were able to light nine of the homes and gave them clear, bright reliable light. The mamas and children were so thrilled to receive this gift of light. Here in the States, we don’t often think about the importance of light and the difference it can make to a home without power. They were really excited about now having light in their bathrooms. I found a number of mamas singing praise songs from the shower at night! We were also able to furnish solar power lanterns for the mamas and teachers so they can move around safely at night and also charge their cell phones. They were also very appreciative of our work in their homes and the donation of portable lanterns. Thank you so much for partnering with us as we give them a step up in their lives. God bless. Charlene”
